Activation of Fawkner Neighbourhood Centre

Expressions of Interest are called from community members interested in becoming part of a Reference Committee for the activation of the Fawkner Neighbourhood Centre.

This is a great opportunity to be part of the creation of something exciting. An opportunity to help create a new Neighbourhood House in Fawkner by bringing your vision and passion to the table.

The purpose of the Reference Committee is to guide and inform the auspice agency, North West Neighbourhood House Network, (NWNHN) to ensure the establishment of a new organisation based on best practice in structure, governance and operations.

We are committed to build a sustainable and viable Neighbourhood Centre in Fawkner with the aim of handing a strong and vibrant organisation with a strong governance structure back to the community by 2021.

The Reference Committee will meet monthly at 79 Jukes Road Fawkner until June 30th 2020. At that time there will be a review going forward.

Eid Mubarak!

With Ramadan finishing last week, the Fawkner Community House overflowed with locals joining together to celebrate Eid. There was food galore, catered by Fawkner Kebab Shop and many other homemade treats, as well as a scarf stall for anyone wanting to update their wardrobe for a bargain! Fawkner Community House Community Services Volunteer Khaedeejah Anderson said “the Open House Eid Celebration was a wonderful success. It brought many cultures and groups together in a unified celebration of faith.”

Fawkner Community House is under caretaker arrangements

The Committee of Management of Fawkner Community House (Incorporated) has made some very difficult decisions over the last month. An independent audit report received by the Committee at the start of May 2019 revealed the House was trading insolvent.

A primary obligation is to all the staff of the house whom we have been forced to make redundant due to the house financial position. We have provided to all staff information on their entitlements and are proceeding with a process where they will be able to make a claim for payment of their full entitlements.

The Committee of Management is aware of the importance of the House and its programs and services to the local community. Caretaker arrangements have been put in place so the House will continue to operate in a caretaker mode to maintain existing programs, room hire and other services, with assistance of the Northwest Neighbourhood House Network (Inc) and support of Moreland Council.

Upgrade Upfield line campaign endorsed by community house

The Board of the Community House endorsed the Upfield Transport Alliance campaign at the Board meeting on 6 March to improve public transport for Upfield train line, including Fawkner residents. We urge users of the Community House to support this campaign.

A successful community rally was held at the Bonwick Street shops in Fawkner on Saturday 16 March. Read a report including videos of speeches made.

Moreland-Hume Social and Economic Inclusion Project

The Fawkner Community House Moreland-Hume Social and Economic Inclusion Project will address social and economic exclusion of different groups, including women, young people, men and different cultural groups, across Moreland’s north and Hume areas. The project will include activities such as: support with job searches and preparing applications; free vocational training; linking to employers and employment mentoring; work placements; strengthening connections across diverse communities; community dinners; excursions; camps.
